It is my honor to announce the Women in AV (WAVE) Group will be launching the first of its kind mentoring program for the AV professional community in April 2012. Over the past nine months, more than 300 women in the audiovisual (AV) industry have come together to share our stories; discuss important challenges and opportunities we face in a male-dominated industry; and celebrate our talents and the unique perspectives we contribute to our industry’s continued success and future growth. Now, we’re ready to take that sharing to a whole new level!
Mentoring is the chance to give of yourself to another professional and individual in ways you may not even know will change the course of their lives and career forever. A mentor is defined as a wise and trusted counselor and teacher and we all have something within us we can offer each other. In this unique time of technological changes, mentoring is multi-faceted and reaches across all generations.
There are currently four generations in our workforce, which has never occurred in our history. Each generation has unique values, priorities, assets and perspectives about what is important and makes a company thrive. Given we are undergoing a workforce transformation; we must also be assessing internally how we work together and are open to identifying and implementing our generational strengths and weaknesses.
With the advent of social technologies, we are looking to our younger generations to educate our industry on staying relevant and cutting edge in this new internet-based and AV/IT converged world we live in through reverse mentoring. And, younger generations are seeking access and resources for learning experience and wisdom from our seasoned professionals on how to advance their professional and personal careers, especially, in a male-dominated industry. Men, we’ll also be looking to you for your guidance and counsel as so many of you have encouraged and supported us and have a critical perspective we need to help advance women in our industry and recruit new members!
In April 2012, we’ll launch our WAVE website and one of our key focuses will be developing our mentoring program. We will offer blogs, one-on-one connecting, webinars, education, resources and even a virtual book club! InfoComm International has provided tremendous support to the WAVE group and we’re excited to share with you our upcoming events that will continue to provide opportunities for the development and empowerment of women in AV.
If you are interested in being a mentor or would like to know when the WAVE Mentoring Group is available, please send an email with your interests and what you want to see included in our mentoring program to firstname.lastname@example.org.
